Without a doubt, the Christmas season is one of the most anticipated and joyous times of the entire year . . . the weather turns cooler [not so much here in Texas], schools close for about two weeks, there are parties and yummy treats all the time, choirs of all kinds are heard singing beautiful songs of the season and gifts are bought and delivered with anticipation of fun times to come!
With that in mind, I recently ask my Tour choirboys what they wanted for Christmas this year. Of course, the list seemed endless and here were the top answers from the boys in no particular order:
Roller blades, video games, cash, gift cards [to anywhere and for anything!], skate boards, bikes, books, drones, iPhones, watch [preferably with a phone!], iPads, laptops, TV [the bigger and thinner the better!], ‘cool’ clothing and shoes [expensive and trendy!], DVD’s, Lego’s and musical instruments. There were many more requests, but you get the idea!
And then, scattered among all the above . . . there were these:
Stop people from shooting kids, parents stop hurting their children [physically and mentally], stop bullying, no more divorce and ‘peace on earth’.
It gave me pause, that at a time when our children focus on the multitude of physical things they want . . . that some [many actually] wanted only things that will probably not happen.
I tell all our boys that especially at this time of year, they do much more than just sing for people . . . through their singing, they bring hope, joy and inspiration to so many who are searching for just those very things.
Quite a tall order for our 8 – 13 year old boys . . . and yet, they come through EVERY year!
All of us here at the Fort Bend Boys Choir, from our boys and our staff, to our Board of Directors wish you the kind of Christmas you are dreaming of and praying for.
May it be so and come to pass ~
