From Executive Director, Tiana Mortimer
Do you ever use a person, place or thing as a benchmark for a length of time gone by? For instance, I know the oak tree in my front yard is 14 years old because my husband and I planted a large acorn in the spot when my youngest son was only one year old. I can say the same about my tenure here at the Fort Bend Boys Choir. My oldest son was just a wee lad of six months when I started and now he is 18½ years old – you do the math! My question to all of you is: what benchmark can you use to mark the passage of time with the Fort Bend Boys Choir?
35 years of “making a difference … one boy at a time” – Can you believe that the Fort Bend Boys Choir of Texas is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year? What were you doing 35 years ago? Can you remember? Were you even born yet? Perhaps a few pop culture references might jog your memory:
The movie E.T. was a smash hit and Michael Jackson released his multi-platinum album Thriller and made the Moonwalk an iconic dance move. Actor Ronald Reagan was our U.S. President and the first CD player was sold. Gas was only 91₵ a gallon and the price of a postage stamp was only 20₵.
It is hard to believe that I have now been with the organization for half of its history! I can mark my passage of time with the Fort Bend Boys Choir by the things I witnessed and got to be a part of. For instance, in my first full year, we moved the choir office and the Choir released its fifth CD, Live … on Tour! I remember all the excitement from the 20th anniversary tour in 2002 to Italy where the Tour Choir got to sing for Pope John Paul II.
Another momentous occasion was Mr. Adams taking the phone call from our 43rd President of the United States George Bush and accepting the invitation to sing at the 2001 Lighting of the National Christmas Tree at the White House. (I think Mr. A was a bit stunned after that phone call!) This was before 9/11 and I remember being heavily pregnant with son #2.
As you can see, there are many moments you can reflect on that takes you back in time. Whether you have been a long-time supporter of the Fort Bend Boys Choir or a recent addition to the choir fold, there is always something going on here that, for future reference, you can trace back to a certain time. So the question is – five, ten, or even twenty years from now, what choir happenings from this 35th anniversary milestone will you remember and use as a benchmark?
I hope that our upcoming Spring Concert will be one of those memory-making events! Ensure your calendars are marked for Saturday, May 13, 2017 at Grace Presbyterian Church in Houston. Kicking off at 7:00 p.m. will be our adorably talented young six and seven year olds in Music Magic followed by our treble groups – the Training, Town and Tour Choirs – and then Cantabilé, our alumni choir of changed voices. A special cookie and punch reception will follow the concert in celebration of our 35th anniversary season. Boys Can Sing … Only Boys Aloud!
35 years of excellence
I think our tagline for this special milestone year speaks for itself. However, this 35th anniversary will be firmly entrenched in my mind because it is also the same year my oldest son is graduating high school and starting college. And I am sure that our choirboys, especially those in Tour Choir heading to Switzerland this summer, will use this performance season as a benchmark in their own lives.
