We are getting ready in only a week to make our 34th concert tour, this season back to where we had our very first concert tour in 1982 . . . to the state of Tennessee!
Then, we only stayed three days in Nashville, singing for a national convention at the Opry Land Hotel.
Now, we will travel the entire state for two weeks, with stops into Kentucky and North Carolina too.
So much has changed in the past 34 years – some great things and some not so great things.
Then, parents and the family commitment meant more than it does now.
Now, some parents . . . too many parents, make excuses for their boys and from time to time each year, they outright lie about why their son cannot make his commitment that they signed up for and agreed to in writing.
Then, it was an honor for their son to be selected to participate in our organization. Now it seems [in too many cases] that it is just another thing to cram into an already busy and over-committed schedule for both the parent and the boy.
Yes, we have grown significantly larger in numbers and not every parent acts the same way, but there has clearly been a change in the behavior of too many parents . . . and not in a good way.
I believe this is caused for many reasons, not the least of which is the continuing and further decline in the moral fiber of our nation and the family unit.
The boys, on the other hand have changed very little . . . they still love to sing as much as they did in 1982 and they still keep coming to audition! They still love the camaraderie-ship and making lots of new friends. And they still learn that they are changing the world and making a difference in peoples lives by the sharing of their beautiful, God-given music.
I fully realize that the parents are significant, in that they provide transportation and financial support . . . I only wish that some of them did not come with so much baggage attached!
