After working with boys for over 45 years; teaching and listening to them . . . here are my top ten things that I have found to be true. It’s a fairly simple list and will pay such big dividends in both their lives and yours.
Read to them and tell them stories . . . stories are the best, as it lets them use their imagination even more.
Listen to them, especially the small stuff . . . because to them, it’s big.
Comfort them . . . a pat on the back does wonders for their confidence.
Make and embrace traditions . . . boys love meaningful traditions.
Eat with them . . . by sharing a meal, you have a unique time to engage in some great dialogue.
Tell them they are important to you . . . and do it as often as you can.
Celebrate with them . . . believe in them and their dreams.
Play games with them . . . it doesn’t matter what, it matters that you do.
Remember with them . . . sad or happy memories. Let them lead the way.
Finally . . . love them for who they are, not what they are. And don’t just say it – show it!
